Crochet Abbreviations

One of the scariest parts of reading a pattern is reading the crochet abbreviations…. Below are common abbreviations used and their meanings. Usually, a pattern includes a list of abbreviations at the beginning, but if not, here is a nifty list for reference!

Symbols:

( ) – work instructions within parentheses as many times as instructed

[ ] – work instructions within parentheses as many times as instructed

* – work from star to end of sentence as many times as instructed.

Abbreviations:

alt – alternate

approx – approximately

beg – beginning

bet – between

BL – back loop

bo – bobble

bp – back post

bpdc – back post double crochet

bpsc – back post single crochet

bptr – back post treble crochet

ch – chain

CL – cluster

cont – continue

dc- double crochet

dc2tog – double crochet 2 stitches together

dec – decrease

FL – front loops

fp – front post

fpdc – front post doube crochet

fpsc – front post single crochet

fptr – front post treble crochet

hdc – half double crochet

inc – increase

lp / lps – loop, loops

p – picot

pc – popcorn

pm – place marker

prev – previous

rep – repeat

rnd – round

RS – right side (the pretty side of the crochet)

sc – single crochet

sc2tog – sc 2 stitches together

sk – skip

sl st – slip stitch

sp – space

st / sts – stitch, stitches

tbl – through back loop

tog – together

tr – treble crochet (triple crochet)

yo – yarn over
