Baby Octopus Crochet Pattern

I have recently been working on a baby blanket for a customer, and I love when things match. Since I am not very good at making newborn hats, I thought a little plushie would be perfect! Below is the Baby Octopus Crochet Pattern, so you can try it out too! The feet alternate colors to match the blanket, and it is so puffy, it is sure to be a cute addition to any other stuffed animals they may have.

Difficulty: Intermediate

Abbreviations used:
  • Ch- chain
  • Rep- repeat
  • Sc- single crochet
  • Sc2tog- single crochet 2 stitches together (also known as decrease)
  • sl st- slip stitch
  • st / sts- stitch, stitches
Materials needed:

These links provided will give you enough yarn to either do a ton of octopuses, or make 2 or 3 blankets to match. I never can have enough yarn, so I bought 3 balls of each color, and a big ball of the white.

Directions:

The Head:

  23. *1 sc in next 2 sts, Sc2tog. Rep from * to end (18 sts)
  24. *1 sc in next st, Sc2tog. Rep from * to end (12sts)

Finish stuffing if more is needed, bind off and leave about 8 inched of string. Sew together the little hole left at the base to prevent loss of stuffing.

The mouth:
  1. Sc 5, sl st together. Ch 1 and turn.
  2. Sc into the loop 12 times. Sl st twice and bind off. Leave a 6 inch tail for sewing onto the head.

The Legs:

Make a total of 8 legs (it is an octopus, so I guess that’s obvious…!) When making the feet, make 2 pink, 2 yellow, 2 lilac, and 2 mint.

Making the colored “feet”:

  1. Ch 2 with color of choice. In second ch from hook, sc 6.
  2. Working in the round, Sc 2 in each st around (12 sts).
  3. *Sc in first st, 2 sc in next st. Rep from * around (18 sts).
  4. Sl st into next st and bind off. Weave in the colored yarn ends before making the rest of the leg.
Making the “legs”:

2015-04-02 16.20.05

  1. Make a sl st on hook with white yarn. Insert into st at edge of colored circle. Sc around (18 sts).
  2. Working in the round (do not sl st), sc 4 rows.
  3. Sc2tog next st. (17 sts).
  4. Sc around an additional 12 rows (16 rows total)
  5. Bind off, leave a 8 inch tail. Stuff the leg, drawstring close the leg (using the tail and a needle, go in and out the top row of stitches to create a drawstring. Pull tight to close the leg). Weave in the tail a little to ensure a tight close. The remaining length of the tail will be used to stitch the legs onto the head.
2015-04-02 16.18.28Putting it all together:

Sew the mouth on in-between and slightly below the eyes.

Attach the legs to the base of the head. Since there are 2 of each color, attach each color opposite of each other.

And there you are, a Baby Octopus Plushie of your very own!

Hi Brenda! I’m sorry to say that I haven’t written a pattern yet for that blanket… I’ll add it to the list!
